Notes and excerpts on the diaries, 1862-66, of John W. Peyton [manuscript] 1974.

Shotwell has transcribed excerpts from Peyton's diary and added his own notes and illustrative maps. The sections copied deal chiefly with life near Orange Court House during the Civil War as observed by Peyton, a convalescent Confederate veteran. Peyton commented on nearby military maneuvers and engagements, foraging and pillaging by the troops, deserters, runaway slaves and the burning and rebuilding of his home. Family and local events, war news from elsewhere and his religious conversion are also noted.
